Kawarau Village: From Gold Rush Roots to Luxury Lakeside Accommodations 

Kawarau Village, nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu in Queenstown, boasts a rich tapestry of history, evolving from a pivotal site during the 19th-century gold rush to a modern hub of luxury and leisure.

In the 1860s, the area around Kawarau Falls was integral to the Otago gold rush. The Kawarau River served as a crucial route for miners, and the nearby Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge, completed in 1880, facilitated access to the goldfields. The transformation of Kawarau Village into a luxury destination began in the early 21st century. Between 2010 and 2012, the area saw significant development, including the construction of the 178-room Hilton Queenstown Resort & Spa and the 98-room DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Queenstown and Queenstown Village Apartment These establishments marked Kawarau Village Worldwide's entry into Queenstown, enhancing the region's appeal to international tourists.
The development also included luxury serviced apartments and a range of dining and wellness facilities, creating a comprehensive resort experience. The village's design harmoniously blends with the alpine environment, offering guests stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

🌟 Cultural Integration

The opening of Kawarau Village was marked by a traditional Māori welcome, acknowledging the area's cultural heritage. Sir Tipene O'Regan, a respected Māori elder, formally greeted dignitaries, including then-Prime Minister John Key, during the inauguration ceremony.

Today, Kawarau Village stands as a testament to Queenstown's evolution, offering visitors a unique blend of historical significance and contemporary luxury.
